Sure it's real.
Those insiders depend on their contacts and mutual trust with them, to be able to do their job. So there is an understanding of what is on the record and isn't. And if you violate that - you will quickly obliterate that trust and no one will talk to you.
Which is why a guy like Rick Westhead has a different job as an investigative reporter. That's why you see guys like him break actual stories. But most media outlets are not funding those roles any more.
But you can't expect the traditional insiders to be the one that break stories like this with any detail.
