Richards had a couple pain killers which he was likely taking as a result of his job, and he was never convicted as the charges were stayed. 100% the proper course of action was the NHLPA player assistance program. Instead LA got to significantly reduce the cap hit of his bad contract after taking his useful years.
Kane was never even charged with a crime.
