Ryan and Mulgrew hated eachother from the start. No one on the main cast of fond of Jeri Ryan when she started. They had, to that point, spent three or four years together as a cast and then the UPN execs decide they need something to make the show more appealing. They decide Borg Bambi is the way to go. But they also decide that the show doesn't get additional budget for this so one of the main cast has gots ta go to make way.

While business is business, a lot of them looked at it as Jennifer Lien got pushed out for Jeri Ryan while at the same time, the rest of the cast were told they weren't good enough to carry the show.

Apparently Dorn experienced a similar icing out when he first started on DS9 due to the cast's feeling him being parachuted in was a mark against them. I can imagine it would have been a much longer and severe icing out if him arriving also saw Alexander Siddig fired to make way.

Say what you will, the cast had a point. Kate Mulgrew just took it to the nth degree and never forgave Ryan until long after the series ended.
