Katz would pay it just to keep his name recognition for the organization. I do think the Oilers will pay whatever it takes and it's just a matter of McDavid deciding between money and winning a cup/not living in Edmonton.

If McDavid is confident in what he gets as a UFA it's a one year difference (plus less any tax advantages, improved endorsement opportunities, limited as his personality may be, etc). If he pushes hard enough he doesn't even have to forgo that 8th year - he pulls a Tkachuk.
