I can understand those concerns. I would think that when donating you have pretty much zero chance of getting anything because it's streile needles used on you. The problems were that they weren't able to properly screen some of the blood going through and a few unlucky patients that needed the blood were the ones infected.
Sometimes I see first time donors faint while donating, however it's all mental.
