Given the recent success of both teams amateur scouting departments I would be inclinded to trust the Flames amateur scouts more than I would trust the ability of players drafted by Detroit.
From 2015-2019 (basically players that today 22-26 years old) each team had the following results in terms of players who have played at least 50 games in the NHL
Detroit - 10 out of 45 picks (22.2%) - top 5 players out of those 45 picks were Seider, Hronek, Zadina, Rasmussen and Velano. In that time period the Red Wings had 23 picks in the first 3 rounds.
Calgary - 8 out of 24 picks (33%). Top five players were Tkachuk, Fox, Anderson, Mangiapane and Dube. In that time period the Flames had 9 picks in the first 3 rounds.
I am sure there may be good players in the Detroit system but if I was given a choice between letting our scouts find a great player or trying to find a great player that is in another system my money would be on our scouts.
