That isn't a slight on him I like him, glad we have and want to keep him but the debate for him would start at is he close to a top 20 (which might be a stretch) not top 8.
The question is not whether he is a top-8 defenceman now, but whether he can be. Apparently enough people have been willing to consider him that way that it's not an entirely ridiculous idea; that's all.

As for the Norris voting, it hasn't become that, it's always been that. People were making the exact same complaint in the 1980s. Nothing in hockey is harder to quantify than the defensive contributions of an individual player, and the people who vote on awards don't even try.
