That said... the white elephant gift giving, with a very clearly defined max amount of ... say ~$25 or $35 with a family or larger group (~12people) has always been entertaining, fun, and a great reason to have a pot luck where everyone goes home with a container of leftovers.
We save the gift cards they give us and give it back to them the next year.
