Captain Marvel could have been popular and interesting if they had cast her right or wrote her with any charm or personality or charisma or motivation.
They didn't. They wrote a generic "strong female character" which is a modern Hollywood failing. All we got was an ex-sitcom child star that always looked pissed off and cocky in every shot.
Look at the strong female characters from James Cameron films for example, like Ripley or Sarah Connor. He shows them as vulnerable, scared, relatable and yet kick-ass when it comes time for it. Brie Larson is basically that cocky mean girl at work that always looks pissed off and you want to stay away from.
