Let’s say for a moment both players would accept the trade… I don’t know what the cost would be. Calgary would for sure have to add/retain salary. But I’m not sure how much it would have to be in either case. Too much and it’s definitely not worth it.
To Calgary:
Gaudreau
To Columbus:
Huberdeau ($2 million AAV retained)
2nd round pick
Who says no?
The $2 million retained on Huberdeau’s contract saves Columbus a net $1.25 million in annual salary cap in the trade. Calgary basically gets Gaudreau for a cap hit of $11.75 million.
That seems like the flames are getting the worse part of the deal but the bigger problem for Columbus in this trade is that Huberdeau’s contract is 2 years longer than Gaudreau’s. That’s two extra years of an $8.5 million cap hit for the blue jackets if they took Huberdeau. That’s why I included the 2nd round pick. But I doubt that would be enough to entice the blue jackets… they would likely require a 1st round pick which would be out of the question for the flames at this point.
Honestly, I can’t see it ever happening. I think Gaudreau would do better here than Huberdeau but there would also be more pressure on Gaudreau than ever before because many fans would blame him for this whole collapse. Redeeming himself with the fans would be a tall order.

The biggest problem here is with Gaudreau off the books (in your post) Huberdeau is still on for 2 years at 8.5 (on your post while Gaudreau is off) if that isnt eaten i see no way CBJ takes this and ontop of that i think they need to take Huberdeau at more retained to make up for it. We're talking 25% retained minimum ($7.875 AAV till the contract ends) and possibly more.
