Agreed. I’ll be excited to be a younger, faster team above all else. Some of the biggest mistakes that Treliving made (that I hope Conroy learned from) were having players that were over-paid for the “intangibles”. Brouwer, Coleman, Neal, Kadri… all guys that supposedly had that x-factor that made them a handful for other teams to deal with. Guys that came off of great performances in playoffs but were let downs once they got their last big contract.
We would hear the same thing with each of these player when their first season with the flames was rough… “Well, they were probably still tired and banged up from their playoff run the previous year - but next year they’ll be great”.
Without fail, every off-season, Treliving just had to get that veteran guy who over-performed for their team in the playoffs. No matter the cost. And without fail, none of those guys ever lived up to that paycheque.
Feels like guys like that need to be developed within the system rather than bought by the highest bidder. Ferland is a perfect example. I think guys like Klapka and Duehr could be that for the flames if given opportunity.
