You hear talk that the assistant coaches are the guys the players go to when they are having problems with the coach, or need someone to confide in. Who's going to feel comfortable talking to Coffey about stuff when he's a direct pipeline to ownership?
And if he's there to help the defence, that's laughable. When he played analysts described him as reinventing the position as a "rover"--more like a 4th forward a lot of the time--which basically meant he had great personal numbers in the goal-filled 80s, but he skated fast enough to get back in the play sometimes.
