knoblauch on getting a team to buy into being consistently good defensively: "first thing, and i'm sure every coach talks about it, if you're going to have success in this league, you have to be good defensively. that's on the penalty kill, and obvious 5v5 is a big part of that. throughout the year, i think 15 of the top 17 defensive teams on goals against made the playoffs. the year before that, it was 16 of 19. obviously, there's very strong correlation that if you are a good defensive team, you're going to have success winning games. i think any player wants to have success individually, but it feels a lot better winning as a team. i think my time as a head coach, certainly in my time in erie, is i was fortunate to have some really good offensive players.
throughout my time, i don't think i hindered their offensive production at all, but my time there, we were always first or second in goals against average. i
