The Oilers organization have always used their wacky ways to consider themselves pioneers.
Hiring Eakins becuase he had unconventional methods with the Marlies and other teams really wanted him, so fire your old coach via Skype.
Hiring Pat Quinn and Renny as a two headed coach monster.
Offering less to Comrie in his second contract because he should be thankful for being overpaid in his first.
Etc etc.
For McDavid, it gives him the chance to get some pals some cash and opportunity they would've get anywhere else, but really it won't keep him there. Katz agreeing to this really doesn't lock down McDavid as being any more loyal. These pals of his will take a couple $M from the Oilers and when McDavid signs with the Kings, Rangers, of Blackhawks in a few seasons, all these guys, if still employed by Oilers, will disappear from Edmonton too.
