They came up with that logo about the time they merged with Morgan's, a department store chain from Quebec. The Morgan's logo began with a ribbon ‘M’ that looked almost exactly like the ‘B’ from The Bay, but sideways. Apparently this was their idea of unifying the branding across the two chains.
When Market Mall first opened in Calgary, it briefly had a Morgan's store, which was soon converted to The Bay. It seems there was some thought of using the Morgan's name in the lowly suburban malls, and saving The Bay moniker for the prestigious downtown locations. If so, I suspect the person containing that thought was swiftly sacked.
