Holy crap, yes Bromley Square aka 'Calgary's highrise Ghetto' deserves its own thread.
Who here has lived there and/or visited someone who lives there?
I lived there from 2002 - 2006 in good'ol 3204 (penthouse baby
). I was 21-25 years old during that phase, so needless to say there were quite some memorable times. Listed (in no particular order) are some of my most notable memories:
-Seeing that view for the very first time.. I was quick to sign the lease and pay the security deposit after that!
-The umpteen times the water (hot or complete) was turned off. Showed up at work a couple times with devilish hair after mistakingly sleeping till 9:01am.
-Dropping 4 floors what felt uncontrollably in the east glass elevator. That elevator was shut down for 4 or so months after that.
-getting stuck in the elevators numerous times (all 4 of them).
-waiting eons some days for an elevator to come up to my floor. I remember walking down 32 floors of stairs some mornings because that was faster.
-unfortunate experience of watching some dude from 2901 leap to his death last summer. A massive black cloud and raging hailstorm enveloped the downtown core soon after. It was very eerie and left me pretty shaken for awhile. I had to under the instruction from the authorities go down to explain what I saw to the investigator. When I got down there, there was no ambulance, police or anything yet. I saw a woman with a stroller and child walking towards the scene, knowing what they were about to see, I ran across the 'mess' to stop them.
*Sorry about the gore. Not something I would want anyone else to have to see.
-Sketchy folk always surrounding the building and in front of the macs/pizza 555/liquor store. Seeing that line-up every day at the Mustard Seed was always a sobering sight.
-That god awful smell behind the macs in the alley.
-The trains... oh boy do I
not miss those trains! Listening to those beasts brake for 5-10mins on a Sunday morning was never fun. I have to admit though, I was a fan of toy trains when I was a kid and it was kind of neat seeing the 150 or so cars in a row (especially when they were all full of lime yellow sulphur!)
-Making sure guests didn't throw shyte off the balcony was occaisionally a challenge.
-The 'gym'... lol.
Wasn't all bad..
-Being mere blocks from the Ctrain, 17th Ave SW, 4th St SW and cool hangouts like the Hop'n'Brew, Drum & Monkey, Bottlescrew Bills (finished my passport!) and being able to walk to/from the 'Dome was a huge bonus!
-I was occaisionally mocked for living across the street from Calgary's gay strip on 10th ave and 1st St SW. Good hot dog stand in front of boystown though
-The view, I loved the city view and my neighboors across the hallway had a sweet view of the Rockies on a clear day. The storms are quite a site to see from up there too. We would go up on to the roof to watch the Stampede fireworks which was always a blast. Definate vantage point.
Kind of interesting to note too that when I first moved in there, the rent was $775/month for the 2 bedroom 800 sq ft apartment. Now, my former room mate who is still living there is paying $1517/month. But I guess that's the way it is in Cowtown these days.
So yeah, a lot of good, a lot of bad. All in all a very character building phase of my life!
