I had always hoped this was going to happen with the Oilers but year after year it just seemed like McDavid and Draisaitl were unstoppable. Their power play is too good and their superstars can carry them to the playoffs guaranteed. For the first time these guys look more human and not as dominant as they have in the past. Their depth seemed improved with Nuge, Hyman, Kane all capable top 6 forwards but all are now over 30. Ekholm looked like a dream acquisition for them but with his age and term that deal now looks questionable. Campbell was questionable from the start and he seems doomed to fail no matter what.
With McDrai not being absolutely dominant the Oilers look like a bad team and the timing of this is perfect. They have no real prospect pipeline and their roster is aging quickly. Does it make sense for McDrai to commit the rest of their careers in Edmonton? Unless they both ask out chances they walk vs getting assets for them is much higher.
I have hated Woodcroft since the series in 2022 and enjoy this failure. If they do get a new coach it could be enough to turn their season around but I hope they trade their 1st in hopes of righting the ship to only continue to toil at the bottom of the standings without the benefit of a top pick.
