Just checked the standings as of Nov 7th last year...
There were NO teams with a record as bad as the Oilers are currently (though CBJ was close), and NONE of the bottom 10 teams, as of this date, made the playoffs. No team under .500 on Nov 7th made the dance.
The Oilers aren't a basement team, and won't finish 31st overall, but their troubles are real, and those that think they have just been unlucky, and need a spark to get going and they'll be fine, are deluding themselves. The Oilers have below average team defense, below average depth, and below average goaltending - those things aren't going to just fix themselves, once the Oilers start potting a few more goals.
I predicted somewhere (not sure if here) that the Oilers were probably a wild card team, in a deep Pacific division. Now, just 11 games in, a wild card spot is really all they can hope for.
