San Jose is a great example of how a quick rebuild for the Flames is very unlikely. SJ started from a similar point, in that they had a lot of older vets on heavy contracts. Once they realized their window was closed, they started moving the vets for pieces. Great.
But this will be the 5th year of missing the playoffs, and they are just now bottoming out. It's safe to assume at least 2 or 3 years at the bottom, before they start looking to crawl their way out of the basement. By the time they see playoffs again, it will have been 8-10 years, at best.
