Flames draft picks from 2012-2020 that are still playing for the team:
2015: Andersson, Mangiapane
2016: Dube
2017: Ruzicka (6 years post draft, can barely crack the roster)
2018: Pospisil (first ever call up)
2019: Pelletier (counting him as on the roster)
2020: Zary (first ever call up)
58 draft picks in that time, 9 first rounders. 7 total players still playing for the team.
First round Flames picks from that time period still with the team:
2020: Zary
2019: Pelletier
The difference I will concede is that the Oilers average 1st round pick was 7.78 overall, Flames was much lower at 17.
The Oilers can't develop prospects, the Flames can't retain players. The result in the end is the same.

I think the key thing here is that Calgary has shown that they can identify talent. In that same time frame they had identified Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Fox, and even Klyington. Also managed to trade one of their firsts for Hamilton.
Where Edmonton excels in their no goodness, is outside the automatics with McDavid and Draisaitl. They continue to swing and miss or bleed picks for nothing which attribute their their lack of depth. Like a couple seconds for a few weeks of Athanasiou, or a first and second for 30 games of Griffin Reinhart which ended up being Barzal and Beauvillier.
Edmonton is no good.
