It wasn't even an option because of Benning's ineptitude. In the 2021 offseason the Canucks didn't have the cap space to offer him any kind of realistic long term contract because they spent all their money on their trash defense, paying nearly $20M for 2nd and 3rd pairing defensemen in Myers, Ekman-Larsson, Hamonic, and Poolman.
So instead, the only real option was a bridge contract which would naturally have a lower cap hit.
