They better stay right in the thick of the race to even consider it. If Jarmo’s job is in jeopardy he might not have the flexibility to trade a recent top pick to sign a 29 year old to a $70+M extension. They have to be near 1st place to consider it from a pure rental perspective. Would we assume a team coming off a bottom 3 finish should have the expectation to jump back in the playoffs this year?
My hope is Columbus is in the mix and Johnson does want out then a match between the 2 teams makes a ton of sense. Columbus can toss in excess D the Flames will need when they hopefully ship out 3 of their regulars which hopefully bring back a 1st, and multiple 2nds and later round picks.
