He is apparently really close with McDavid and everything they do is to keep McDavid happy. I can't imagine it would go over well with McDavid if he thought the Oilers cheated his buddy from getting paid.
Generally speaking, it wouldn't be a good look to other players that might be inclined to sign bonus laden contracts with the Oilers in the future either. This way, the Oilers could always just say it wasn't their fault he was injured.
I'm not dying on this hill, but it does just seem too much of a coincidence that it was in game 9, he didn't look injured, and they are not disclosing what the injury is. Then you have Smith and Keith helping the team by just walking away from contracts. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's Ken Holland.
We'll see what happens though. If he comes back to play a 10th game, I'll eat crow.
