Think of it this way.
They fired him after a successful year, coach of the year, where they just signed him to a new extension paying him $3M a year.
They are paying him that much now NOT to coach the team.
So whatever reasons they had to fire him, they were willing to swallow that.

Which is why whether or not he won a playoff round I don't think would have mattered.
