Flames need to build a roster with an elite #1 centre and elite #1 defenceman.

The Flames just don’t have a franchise player. You can build a contending team as long as you have franchise talent. If this team had Gaudreau and Tkachuk instead of Kadri and Huberdeau I think they could still be a contending team with their deep blueline and good goaltending. Those 3 propped Lindholm up to be a much better offensive player than he has shown.
The fact this team lost their 2 franchise players in one summer and thought they could stay a contender is a massive miscalculation. Selke and Vezina finalist with a HOF Jack Adams winner gave management more confidence in their group than they should have.
