This “zone defence” is either not being coached properly or the understanding and execution is totally being missed. Watching the flames defend and the puck was to the left of Markstrom, all 5 flames players were below the top of the circle and on markstroms left. This system isn’t giving them a breakout option because 5 skaters are within about 20’ of each other and they have 2 defenders and possibly 1 forward to defend against a zone exit.
It’s like watching a novice team trying to not have 5 kids on the puck and pretend to be spread out but actually being too clumped together to be effective.
