One, when I still lived in Manitoba (ie: pre-2006) and was still a kid. Hardly what you were fishing for with that question.

I don't mean if it's important/work-related and just a quick question for like a 3-5 minute call, that's understandable. But once it progresses past that to a "so how's life / what's new?" type conversation. Like should I just leave? I find it disrespectful.
I've got a newer buddy like this and my sister can do that too, but they're very social outgoing people, much more than myself. Maybe I'll just never understand true extroverts..

I absolutely cannot stand this. I make a point of keeping my phone on vibrate in my jacket pocket and not looking at it unless I hear it's absolutely off the rails, in which case I say "Excuse me, my phone is blowing up, do you mind if I look quickly?" Then I do, get annoyed because it's nothing I needed to look at, put it on Focus mode, and go back to giving the person(s) I'm with my undivided attention.
I am a true extrovert, but nothing about being an extrovert makes me want to be on my phone with other people constantly.
