Johnny literally agrred to a new contract one day and then went back on his word then next, with no time left to even try to trade him.
Besides... to this day, I remain convinced that Tkachuk really did want to stay but it all hinged on getting Sutter to relent on his "no-Captain" schtick. I think he talked to Sutter after the season ended and that's what switched him from wanting to stay vs wanting to leave.
I can't imagine anyone deciding to stay and work for a stubborn boss who refuses to bend on anything, when they have an opportunity to go somewhere else and be way more appreciated.
