They didn't even need to be in the top 5 to find some gems from last year draft, even getting another in the top 20 would have been great. They were a bubble team in the playoffs with Gaudreau/ Tkachuk. They got Weegar/Huberdeau coming off career years in Florida, they should have flipped them for a haul, seeing as how both were also on good contracts for one more year.
Instead, signed huberdeau to $10.5 x 8, then wasted a first rounder to dump Monahan for a year to lock in another neal type contract in Kadri for 7 years.
Instead of getting younger, they got older, and got worse. Now re signing a bunch of players, and rolling with the same bubble team. Backlund, sure ok. Then Hanifin, Lindholm, and rumors of Tanev too. Running it back with the same "core", and having basically no high end prospects in the pipeline. Team has no direction
