I have to assume this is intentional by vehicle manufactures to force you to get the wipers replaced with a service appointment, or at least make it easier to upsell the replacement when you're getting something else done. The next time you have it at the dealer to get something done, you'll remember the screwdriver to your palm and decide that it's worth it to pay double or triple the amount it should cost to get them done by the service bay.
