Default We're healthier than sickly Edmontonians

I know these articles really go nowhere, but it was amusing to see the Medical Officer for Capital Health "weigh" in on the subject....

No matter which way you slice it, Calgarians are healthier than residents of the Edmonton region, according to Capital Health.

Edmontonians are more likely to smoke, be overweight, eat fewer vegetables, be physically inactive and suffer from ailments such as diabetes and consider their mental health to be less than good, says How Healthy Are We 2006, the annual report of medical officer of health Dr. Gerry Predy.

And the life expectancy of an Edmonton male is nearly two years less than a Calgarian, says the report, which cites 2005 statistics from a number of sources including Statistics Canada and Alberta Health. The difference is very much a matter of money and demographics, Predy said Thursday.

"We have an older population, poorer and more aboriginals," he said. "A lot of it is related to income. We compare ourselves to Calgary all the time. Because of these factors, they certainly are healthier than we are overall."

That last paragraph just might make Sundeep cry..... I wonder, was he using the Edm vs Calgary angle to spur people on to improve and "beat" Calgary?
