Signing another guy who can lock us into being too good to be bad, too bad to be good, isn't the move.

I don't think Hanifin is a player that would keep the Flames artificially higher in the standings. Also, unless a player signs for a bad deal, I do believe that players with good contracts (or fair ones) have just as much value and often more value than expiring deals. As long as the Flames don't overpay for him (and give him too much trade protection!), then it provides the Flames with the flexibility to deal him at some point if needed, rather than be forced to deal him today (and the market may not be strong, or Hanifin may get injured this season).


As long as it isn't a bad deal with too much trade protection, I view this as a good thing, rather than as something to worry about.
