I disliked how they did Rom wrong (IMO), but otherwise I have enjoyed the season. I think the weakness is actually the loose tie together plot- we're in episode 8 and have very little information on what is actually going on there? So I assume that's going to take over and become the main focus for the last two episodes.
I think that if they were going to do a season long arc they should tie it in more. Or if they were going to go more episodic, self contained, then totally reject the loose arc plot. The best way to blend arc and self contained is the DS9 way imo; 70% episodes are focused on plot arc, while the 30% not are spliced in at points and depict every day life/ social ongoings aboard the shift with the arc as a setting point almost (a backdrop...) Doing this 90% episode devoted to self contained with 10% of each episode dedicated to the arc plot is... strange and disjointed. Makes some of the interceding stories seem hollow while also not fleshing out the arc's purpose or danger.
But! All that critique aside, I think it's actually been a good season. I have laughed a lot. I don't know if they're hitting the nostalgia button too hard for some, but for me it's just right lol. I mean, look at our many pages of tamarian...
