The Oilers of the mid-1980s would have that record locked down for eternity. They used to enter the attacking zone at breakneck speed, three forwards exactly abreast, to keep the defenders on their back foot. It worked maybe two times out of three; the third time they would be out of sync and a man would go in offside.
It was a no-lose play. If they weren't offside, they gained the zone with speed. If they were offside, the play was blown dead, the skaters got a rest, and they could keep the same line out for the next attempt. Those were the days before scheduled TV timeouts, so if they were lucky, they would get to catch their breath for the duration of a beer commercial.
That was a very fast team, but you'd never know it by how slowly they ran down the clock. All those offsides added a lot of off-clock minutes to the game.
