We need a more flexible employment model that offers a gradual off-ramp from full-time work to retirement. For most of history, people would reach their peak labour output in their 40s, and then tail off to less demanding work roles as their energy and capacity declined.
Unless you’re self-employed, that’s really hard to do in our modern labour market. If you’re a white-collar professional, there’s no option to ease off to less challenging roles at 4 and then 3 and then 2 days a week. It’s full bore 40 hours a week with the same responsibilities as your 35 year old self, or quit and get a completely different job.
I don’t have the same energy or capacity of keep up with unrelenting new tools and processes that I did 15 years ago. But I’m not ready (and can’t afford) to become a Walmart greeter yet. There has to be something in between.
