I am not sure every player needs time in the NHL before people can determine that they are not suited for the league. It happens all the time and most often people don't blink but because he has a vocal following we hear a lot more about him.

A player passing through waivers in the ~week before a season starts is evidence of absolutely nothing. All teams are almost totally healthy and working to cut their own rosters down.
It's gotta be like 1% of players who get claimed...a lot of guys who don't get claimed go on to become fulltime NHLers.
