Nurse got paid a year before he was set to be a UFA so not a great example and also was a deal that was instantly hated on by the fans and media.
The Flames made some big mistakes with how they handled their RFA’s because they felt they had the base to build around d these guys and win while they had cheaper deals. Squeezing Gaudreau on 1.5-2.5M AAV likely cost the team the difference between a 6-8 year deal. Instead they went out and spent the extra money on guys like Brouwer, Neal, Coleman. I think there was definitely a path to pay Tkachuk on a 6-8 year deal instead of the 3 year deal he signed but having Frolik and the Neal/Lucic contract made it hard to find the space. The Monahan deal ended up not working out long term but the team also did not need to make the trade to get rid of him and could have rode that contract out.
Treliiving loved the 6 year term. Johnny, Dougie, Lindholm, Hanifin, Andersson, as RFA. I think with your core guys you need to try and push for that max term out of ELC. I like the gambles taken by the Devils, Sens and Sabres recently.
