The only templates I'd avoid are the 'known' ones, like the one from MS Word that everyone uses. Maybe template is a bad word... how about 'examples'. To make your own resume out of scratch in Word is doable... but unless you're a Word expert you'll miss out on including some 'cool' functions... like line/spacing stuff, formatting, etc.
