Man, this is so annoying. Everyday I'm driving along and I remember the same piece of advice I want to post here. By the time I get to the computer, I forget WTF I wanted to say.
I do have something else (not all that important). Probably due to the narrow streets, almost all doors open inward in Italy.May not sound all that significant, but I guarantee that you'll embarass yourself once or twice pushing a door on your way out (and crashing) or pulling a door a few times trying to get in.
Oh, I forgot to mention Palatino. Check it out if you pay to enter the colosseum. You pay an extra 2 euro and get to see palatino ruins (right beside colosseo).
And the catacombs. They're pretty cool. You can get there by bus (or just run if you're cowperson). Probably not worth it to take the tour bus. I think it's 40 euro and they'll take you there plus to santa maria maggiore (do this on your own) and san giovanni in laterano.
Cow, you can take the bus 571 from anywhere on via vittorio emmanule II (across teh river from vatican) to san giovanni. 1 euro. Just look at your map first and make sure you're on the right side of the road.
