We've "cured" many cancers with preventative measures, and many cancers are completely curable with current relatively cheap interventions like testicle removal, etc.

Not to mention it is in the best interest of Pharmaceutical companies to keep these patients alive so that they go on other medications as they age.
The other aspect is that not all cancers are the same. Liver cancer involves different cells than brain cancer.
What all the money and research has done is to prolong the lives of patients diagnosed with cancer and to reduce the chance of it coming back. This has been very successful. For example the 5 year mortality rate is 95% survival for Breast Cancer patients due to drugs like Tamoxifen.
