Kind of depends. When I was a kid, I was watching Transformers cartoons - X-Men came later, and by then I wasn't watching many cartoons. The comis I was into were generally ARchie comics. I knew who the X-men were, kind of. I knew who Spiderman was. I knew who Hulk was, but as a tv character, not a comic book movie.
But the Superman movies were still very well known, and then came along Michael Keaton and Batman - so for me, and many people i know, DC was far ahead of Marvel - even without a lot of us knowing the difference between the two companies.
Obviously YMMV.
