7 Samurai is in my top 3 of all time. Ikiru is great.

Here's a selection by decade(ish)

Rashomon. It will haunt you. Also notably the first film to point the camera toward the sun (classic shot through the trees).

Yojimbo. Every classic western is based off Yojimbo. You can't unsee the inspiration in westerns after watching it.

Ran is based off King Lear. It's pretty epic, and one of the few films he did in color.

Dreams is a series of short films. It's him at his most expressive with color, sound, imagery etc. It's ####ing beautiful. One of my favorite films ever, even if there's little to no plot. Has a fun moment where Martin Scorsese plays Vincent van Gogh.
