IIRC, the director of the first two was Brian Singer, who ditched the project in favour of Superman: Returns. Brett Ratner directed the third.

Having said that, I hope they don't get into Mission Impossible or Batman territory with either the Spidey or X-Men franchises. I don't want a different director each movie.

If Sam Raimi had a distaste for Venom, he shouldn't have been in the movie. Venom should be bankable, and could be a spinoff character if handled correctly.

If it was anyone it was Raimi who dropped the ball on this one IMO. Having said that, I would rather Sony end the franchise on 3, which they won't cause they're money hungry, than to see someone else try and take over for Raimi. There's a style that he brings that would be hard to emulate. There's enough feedback from this one for him to know what his fan base is, which I'm surprised he didn't know to start.

One other quick point, but as a slight comic book nerd when it comes to Venom, didn't the Symbiote have healing powers? I recall Brock putting the Symbiote on a female companion that had been mugged pretty badly. I'm thinking that may be one way to get Venom back into the storyline, but (*SPOILER ALERT* Hilight to see) while the symbiote was in the cage Spidey made, and after Brock jumped back in, I thought I saw a rib cage within the explosion. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what I saw.
