If things don't work out we can always name Andersson, Weegar, or Huberdeau as a captain mid-season. I don't think it sends a wrong message, as much as signal a change of the team's direction. What's the real harm of having Backlund as a captain for 40 games, or Andersson for 40 less games?

Sorry, but I don't agree. Flames are looking at it from a long term perspective.
Their division is likely the toughest in the NHL,
Won't be an easy season to make the playoffs.
In my view, Backlund is definitely not the captain
He should had it last season, but his opportunity is gone
