By taking that away, and trying to mash 16 different storylines, this movie lost me.
I'm of the 'Venom was awesome, but under utilized' camp. Who better to introduce to a storyline where the main character has self worth issues? Someone who knows everything about him, and can use that against him. Venom could have been the focus of this movie, but was far from it.
The wedding/harry/emo clusterpoop was horrible. In the comics and in the cartoons, when Parker aquires the symbiote, he has an edge, a coolness factor. Not in his mind, but in reality. I thought they dropped the ball trying to explain this part. Emo was not the way to go, and neither was the Monty Python-esk/Staying Alive sequence. Horrible.
And they had J. Jonah Jamieson's son in the 2nd one... why couldn't he have brought the symbiote back instead of the random metiorite. And since when did the Sandman fly?

Great points Prototype, couldn't have worded it better myself.
Venom should have had his own movie, tormenting Peter Parker as a person, and torturing Spiderman as Venom.
Sandman, I thought he was a pylon in the movie. His character was never deverloped, and got 7 minute intervals of different personalities seperated by half an hour of movie. First, he's bad and breaks out. Then, he has a daughter and is a family man trying to do his best. Then he's just a guy looking to get his life back. Then he's vengful against Peter Parker. Then, he's sorry and flies off... given about 30 minutes of screen time, tops.
FYI Spiderman 4 is expected to come out in 2009. The characters all say that they'll come back depending on the storyline, and I wouldn't mind that at all. Yeah Venom was butchered, but the first two were great and I'll give Raimi the benefit of the doubt (guess he really hated Venom); although it could by hypothesized that Raimi wanted ot get Venom in to leave his "legacy" to all Spiderman fans (as a result, didn't really do himself a favour). I'm just hoping to dear god that its not Lizard and Raven (I absolutely dispise Raven). Note that the door is left open as some of the symbiote is left in Doc Conners lab, leading way to either Carnage or the Lizard.
