Tanev's contract history doesn't suggest that he'd be looking to cash in either. He's only ever signed reasonable contracts. If Conroy can get Tanev for another 3-4 years @ $3.5M, I think the Flames should do it even though the AAV is a little risky. In a worst case scenario if Tanev's game falters, move him down to anchor the bottom pairing instead of the second pairing.
I would actually be very happy if we could sign Tanev to the same contract he just had $4.5M x 4. IMO, he has been our best D over the last 3 seasons. He is a key reason behind a PK that has been top in the league. He also makes every partner better, and his pairing has always been the most reliable/consistent for the Flames. In fact, out of all our UFAs I want Tanev to re-sign the most.

I'm not too worried about injuries myself, because most of his injuries have been unrelated to one another up until this point. His shoulder is a bit of a concern, but we could always use LTIR if injuries become that much of an issue.
