Merc is the European short-form of Mercedes-Benz, whereas North America tends to use Benz.
Merc could also refer to Mercury Marine, who built the LT5 engine fitted to the original Corvette ZR-1. Or if you're really old and crusty, a Mercury which was Ford's 'Buick' competitor. (Ford is to Chevy as Mercury is was to Buick as Lincoln is to Cadillac.)
