Unlike France, Canada does not have secularism built into its constitution or governing traditions. Canada is a liberal country, and a cornerstone of liberalism is religious tolerance. We don’t ban hijabs (notwithstanding the unconstitutional measures in Quebec), forbid Jewish schools from operating, or prevent religious groups from running for school boards.
