That was the original concept and point of the Force, and without the Force life simply wouldn't exist.
Even with Midiclorians the ultimate, we've written ourselves into the corner, the concept does remain the same.
The original Force users the Jedai really didn't care all that much about the galaxy or the non force users. They basically meditated on the Force, but when the Force told them to go out and serve the galaxy they did.
So they were for lack of better word monastic monks.
But the Jedi are really everything that's wrong with the Force. They deny it, but they saw themselves as better then non force users. They claimed to follow the will of the force, but they bent that based on their own perceptions.
Then in their arrogance they created their own enemy. Jedi then became religious warriors. kidnapped children, created armies with child soldiers, ruled planets.
Its no wonder that when the Sith enacted Order 66, the Jedi didn't receive the fore thought to prevent it. The Force for hundreds of years prior to the rise of the Empire, abandoned the Jedi.
The one key point that was right in the sequel Trilogy was Luke's declaration that Jedi Hubris lead to the rise of Palpatine and the Empire, and that the Jedi had to die out.
