Yeah, except sometimes that puts the kid at risk if they have fundamentalist parents or something, so it's not that simple.
I, too, would want to know, but I can appreciate the difficult situation the school is in if looking out for the kid is their priority. So many crappy people/parents that it could be detrimental for the kid if the wrong type of parents find out.
It also takes away some agency from the kid...if their parents are open to the kid choosing their own path, the kid would probably not be keeping such a topic from their parents. I'm 100% sure if my kids were going through something like that they'd not keep it from me because I have a long track record of not being a bigot.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a hater to the core and my kids are well aware of this. But I direct my hate toward people that keep a sloppy house, pick their bare feet in my presence, dry wipe their ass, drive poorly, etc. But for things you can't help? Very tolerant.
